Shipbroker Notes : Paragraph Ships

Paragraph ships: Various government regulations concerning manning, safety appliances etc are determined by a vessel’s tonnage, eg a vessel of 499 GT may be a lot cheaper to run than one of 501 GT. Ships built to take advantage of such limits are known as ‘paragraph ships’. They are usually of the small coasting or short sea trade variety, but note that Aframax tankers could be considered a type of paragraph vessel.
