Vinalines Chairman death penalty

Disgraced former Vinalines Chairman Duong Chi Dung has been ordered to pay compensation to the tune of VND 110bn ($5.15m) for his role in the allegedly fraudulent purchase of a floating dry-dock, and an additional VND 218.2m to cover the court costs and sentencing fees for the trial that ultimately led to him being handed the death penalty. Other former Vinalines executives caught up in the floating dock scandal have been ordered to pay similar amounts for court costs and have also been ordered to pay compensation for their role in the deal.

Chairman Dung and Deputy Phuc were found guilty last year of embezzling VND10bn ($474,000) each, as well as economic mismanagement that brought Vinalines to the brink of collapse under a mountain of debt.
Vietnam’s Supreme Court handed down death sentences, saying they were justified due to the amount of money involved and the fact Dung fled to Cambodia instead of handing himself in to police. All defendants denied any wrong doing and appealed their sentences. Their appeals were dismissed in May.
