Baltic Dry Index (BDI) hit lowest in history 553 points

The Baltic Exchange’s main shipping index today sank to its lowest ever reading.
Baltic Dry Index slipped to 553 points as capesize, supramax and handysize earnings all retreated. It leaves the index a single digit below the record low set by its forerunner the Baltic Freight Index in the summer of 1986 – a marker that the BDI matched earlier this week.
“It’s extremely low,” said Jens Ismar, the chief executive of Western Bulk, who described the present situation as “unsustainable”.
Jens Ismar says arguments over historical statistics are not important, describing the downturn as “dramatic” and today's trading conditions as “not fun at all”.
