Fearnleys Dry Bulk Market Report - Feb 18, 2015

Chartering - Handy

The handy and supra market has not seen any firming rates in front of the Chinese New Year and still suffering on low activity in both hemispheres. For Trans Atlantic’s  are now being fixed at ard low USD 5K while taking their ships to Feast is giving them USD 7-8k depending on delivery. In the Pacific we see the same tendency with levels ranging between 3 and 5k depending on delivery, duration and cargo on board. We do not expect an uptick in the rates during the holidays either. Period activity is limited although some shorter periods have been reported.

Chartering - Panamax

The increase in rates and activity from last week have gradually being reduced and silenced by the celebration of the lunar year of the goat. Most trades in the Far East are back to DOP bss. NOPAC and Aussie rounds are done in low/mid 4.000, and trips via Indonesia to India closer to the 5.000 mark. ECSA rounds should be hovering in the 11.500 + 150 range or 7.000 bss DOP India. In the Western hemisphere activity and rates have elevated marginally and in line with escalating bunkers prices more than an increase in freight levels to Owners. T/A rounds abt 4.000 and fronthaul although limited on volumes abt 8.500. Period business slow, with short period in the mid 7.000 range.

Chartering - Capesize

Major distractions like Carneval and Chinese New Year Celebrations do little to support a segment going through one of its worst crises ever, and average daily spot earnings continue falling a further 20% w-o-w to come in at around usd 5400 - for the units that are still trading/able to secure employment. Atlantic coal activity remains paralyzed, and iron ore volumes from West Australia/Brazil/S.Africa dry up on seasonal doldrums. What little is being concluded for period is mainly index-linked and/or for short duration, exemplified by 181000 dwt/built 2009 done for 3-5 months at a reported usd 6k as floor with an index-linked component said to be 50% of BCI AVE4TC on top.
