Produce 2.7% of worldwide seaborne trade of dry cargo

Seaborne transport of fresh produce will top 100 million tons for the first time ever this year.
Transport of fresh produce still accounts for just 2.7% of worldwide seaborne trade of dry cargo, but shipments are growing every year, led by the carriage of perishables in refrigerated boxes carried by container shipping lines.
Reefer containers are expected to account for around 74% of fresh products transported by sea in 2014.
In contrast, conventional reefer cargoes have seen their market share drop to 26% share over the past decade.
Conventional reefer vessels to refrigerated containers is accelerating as shippers abandon their own conventional services in exchange for slots on full container services.
The worlds largest reefer operator, Seatrade Reefer Chartering, has placed orders for two 2,200-teu containerships which it will operate in parallel with its conventional reefer services.
An elderly fleet of just around 140 conventional reefer vessels by 2025.
