Finland’s Meriaura has placed two Eco general cargo vessels to be built at Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes. The delivery of the first vessel is due at the end of July 2016 and the second will follow three months later.
Meriaura is expected to spend up to EUR 30m ($35.3m) for new tonnage during the next two years. Meriaura said the two 4,700-dwt EcoCoaster ships are designed to cause considerably less environmental impact. Its target is to lower fuel consumption and emissions by using biofuel produced at a refinery controlled by Meriaura and located in Uusikaupunki.
Malkia said: “Our goal is that in five years’ time at least 50% of our fleet consists of fuel efficient and low emission EcoCoasters that are run by biofuel produced by recycled oils.Designing of larger EcoCoaster is under process. We are looking for new clients and strengthening our position on the Baltic and North Sea traffic."
Meriaura operates 20 vessels, including dry cargo ships and multi-purpose deck cargo carriers, operating in Northern Europe.
