Japanese bulk carrier Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha had filed for protection from creditors. Daiichi Chuo said it had been unable to make ends meet on ships it had chartered or finance ships it had ordered, leaving it and a wholly owned subsidiary with a combined 176.9 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in liabilities – a figure it said could rise.
