The International Energy Agency (IEA) report has predicted that coal is set to make up a much smaller part of the US electricity-generation energy mix in the future, dropping from 43% in 2014 to just 20% by 2038 as a result of stricter environmental regulations. This trend is being partly driven by the natural gas lobby, which is keen to push gas as a greener alternative to coal, with gas releasing less CO2 for the same amount of energy, as well as other pollutants such as SOx and fine particles.
