Baltic Dry Index sinks to new low benchmark

A slump in capesize rates today dragged the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) to a new record low. Tuesday’s mark of 484 points represents the third time that a new trough has been set during 2015. The figure breaks the previous record of 498 points in November and is only the second time in history that the BDI has read less than 500 points. While the pain is widespread across the market, a 99 point fall in the Baltic Capesize Index did the damage today.
